I peeped into the AFP ustream tonight. And just as I log in, Amanda asks, “Lady Gaga, friend or foe?” The room lights up with a few friend, then most foe, then some friends, it’s arguably 50/50. I start talking about how I think she’s amazing but her music at this moment is crap. And some guy starts starting she’s total crap. Now it’s really hard to have a convo in that damn chat room cause so much stuff is flying by. I’m sure I missed quite a few of his points. Since this is my blog or whatever, fuck his points and on to mine. (I”m pretty sure his points was she’s a sell out she sucks, she sucks cause she’s a sellout. pop music sucks. etc. etc.) One I’m not a writer so don’t read this for grammar or all that type of stuff.
My reasons for why I love Lady Gaga. She’s pop artist. A pop performance artist. Now, I mean pop in both the music genre and art genre. Are the current singles kind of over produced pop crap? Yes. Do I like them? Yes. I don’t think she’s all crap. Her music isn’t TERRIBLE but it isn’t great either. But I do find everything else rather wonderful.
Lady Gaga’s pre Gaga stuff is pretty damn good, pretty damn good for a girl who is currently only 23. Did she sell out with this album? Sure. But I’m arguing you need to get your foot in the door for pop music especially when you are young. At this point you can’t ignore her. She’s so successful and on the general world pop consciousness that you can’t ignore her. She is all over the fucking place. The money that has been generated because of her selling out, means on the next album she’s going to be able to make more of her own choices. You won’t be able to argue against the dollars that will pour in on just the thought of a next Lady Gaga album. And the label knows that. I can practically see the dollar signs glinting in the record executives eyes from here. (Also take Madonna or Christina or Kylie. First albums not that great. Very basic pop music. Did they get better as they got more successful? Yes. Did they get more of a say? Yes. I mean Madonna has been shitting on a microphone for years now and her label bends to her very will. btw, i love all three of those women too.)
I mean you can see in interviews about how she (gaga) had to fight to do what she could to get even just get a little of her way on her album. (ie the album cover post from earlier.) The fellow in the chat brought up some artists who didn’t sell out and why they are superior, cause you know, they didn’t sell out. Let’s talk about how long it took any one of them to get successful and do albums the way they wanted and where they are now, and how hard they had to work. All of them have had to work extremely hard. And do most of them rate anywhere close to what Gaga is worth? Maybe/Sure to an extent. But when’s the last time you heard something about Ben Folds on any network channel? Does he still have a large and fantastic following? Yes. But when is the last time Ben Folds did back to back music award performances and graced just about every cover you can peep?
Could she have gone that route and never sold out? Yeah. Would we be talking about her right now this early in her career? oh. hell. no.
Her performances are amazing and she’s really pushing some boundaries. Watch the evolution of her music videos. They are getting crazier, because the nuttier means more discussion. More chitchat = all sorts of shit that = more money. And as she’s generating more money her leash is getting longer, the outfits are getting crazier, the performances will get nuttier, and the music will get better. Can you imagine the power house she’s going to become once her music is less label controlled?
Big Big Things are going to come out of the Lady Gaga camp. She’s smart and extremely talented. No one not talented gets accepted into Julliard by 11. Personally I’m looking forward to what is going to happen with her. I think she’s brilliant for taking the fast track. You jump on that opportunity and you ride it out while laughing all the way to the bank.
I’m too tired to read back through this to check it entirely and I”m not even sure if i made any sense. yay.
“On using her sexuality: “My album covers are not sexual at all, which was an issue at my record label. I fought for months, and I cried at meetings. They didn’t think the photos were commercial enough…The last thing a young woman needs is another picture of a sexy pop star writhing in sand, covered in grease, touching herself.”—
Another reason to love her. I can’t wait for when she gets more freedom. The record industry needs to realize good pop music can be made. It doesn’t need to be over-produced and mindless. I think Lady Gaga could be the saviour of the pop music category. I really think she could do it.
